Acid resistance of alkali-activated materials: recent advances and research needs

Cementitious materials are frequently applied in environments which they exposed to acid attack, e.g., sewer systems, biogas plants, and agricultural/food-related industries. Alkali-activated (AAMs) have repeatedly been shown exhibit a remarkably high resistance against attack by organic inorganic acids and, thus, promising candidates for the construction repair of acid-exposed structures. However, reaction mechanisms processes affecting AAMs just recently begun be understood more detail. The present contribution synthesises these advances outlines potentially fruitful avenues research. interaction between proceeds multistep process wherein different aspects deterioration extend depths, complicating overall determination resistance. Partly due this indistinct definition ‘depth corrosion’, effects composition on their cannot unambiguously identified date. Important parallels exist low-Ca weathering/corrosion minerals glasses (dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism). Additional research requirements relate mechanism high-Ca AAMs; how character corroded layer influences rate deterioration; shrinkage bond substrates.
